Punakaiki——Village of West Coast

Our first station in the mystery west coast is Punakaiki

From Arthur Pass, the first check point you’ll reach is Grey Mouth

Grey Mouth, just an ordinary town beside the tranz alpine train station.

Grey Mouth

But this is great place for you to re-stock for you next station, Franz Josef or Punakaiki.

Going north 30min from Grey Mouth, you’ll come into the little village call Punakaiki which famous with Pancake rock, sunset and Blow hole.

Pancake Rock represent the age of the earth, 1 layer about thousand years. If you’re pro in geography, you’ll be interested with this.

Next, there’re lots of beach around this area for you to enjoy the sunset. The beach I chose is Truman Track Beach.

If you’re lazy, another choice is choosing a BBH which near to beach, eg:Punakaiki Beach Hostel, which allow you enjoy the sunset which staying in a warm living room.

Lastly, the amazing Blow Hole:

Blow Hole is a land condition which will create a high different pressure when the wave strike and blow the wave to 10m+. This phenomena can see clearly during the high tide.

Suggestion to view from i-site is +-2 hours away from the highest tide.
But suggestion from me is +-0.5hours(30min) to enjoy the most stunning blow hole show.

1.5hours before

Blow Hole, 满潮前2小时,2 hour before full high tide

During the highest tide:

Blow Hole, 正满潮时!Excatly full tide!

Video tell the different:

After the amazing blow hole, our next station is amazing glacier!

Side Story: Repair my car

After the mountain road at Arthur Pass, I felt my tyre didn’t run well.
Finally we decided have a check for it i Grey Mouth before we move on.

After some checking, I really thanks God for bringing me safe to Grey Mouth! and also thanks for the hard working mechanic who works on Sunday!

The reason I say so is because my tyre is almost burst due to the bad road condition. Another problem is the break pad is already used up.
If one of these goes wrong during Arthur Pass drive, I think…

If I didn’t check in Grey Mouth, I’ll only reach the next mechanic after 300km drive. I don’t think it’ll safe until that time.

Grey Mouth

That’s why I really thanks God and that mechanic!

Moral of the story:
For self-drive trip in NZ, remember the safety is the TOP concern! Even your car passed WOF, it still may have some problem after high mileage drive. Please DO check your car when you plan a long/mountain trip.

Arthur Pass——Road between snow mountain

Year before today, I’m on my way from Arthur Pass to Punakaiki
Since it’s 1 year anniversary, I hope I can complete all the trip 1 year before today for the coming day.

Arthur Pass is one of the most beautiful drive in NZ.
It cross NZ horizontally, which allow you to enjoy the endless mountain.
During winter, you’ll have a wonderful experience in between these snow mountain.

Way to Arthur Pass

Way to Arthur Pass

Since it’s mountain road, for every driver must drive carefully, especially winter.

If you wish to enjoy these beautiful scene without driving…
There is another choice for you, the Tranz Alpine train service

Tranz Alpine is a train service start from Chirstchurch, pass by Arthur Pass and reach Grey Mouth or vice versa.
It allow you enjoy the whole Arthur Pass journey without driving yourself.
The route of the train also have little different and special compared with the driving road.

According my friend experience, the journey of Tranz Alpine during winter just like the 4 seasons:

  • Start from Christchurch, you’ll feel the city hot, just like summer.
  • Once the train leave the city, it come into a wide Greenland like the beginning of spring.
  • As the train start going up the hill, you’ll experience autumn cool and rain.
  • Until certain sea level, you’ll come into the winter snow world.

After the long journey to Arthur Pass, we stayed at YHA…
In fact, there’s only a few people staying in Arthur Pass during winter.
This is because it attraction point——The national park is covered by the snow which may up to adult waist.

One of the speciality of Arthur Pass is wild Kiwi Bird

Devil Punchbowl Fall

After Chit-chat with the host of YHA, he actually a member of Arthur Pass Wildlife Trust who taking care the wild Kiwi Bird in Arthur Pass area.
He also shows me how they track the Kiwi Bird location using a radio wave radar.

Unfortunately, the nearest Kiwi Bird during that day is about 2km away, mean I have no chance to meet them.
However, the host tell me there is a sign of Kiwi Bird’s foot print 2 days before in the village.
It mean you may have a chance to spot a wild Kiwi Bird in Arthur Pass.

The second morning, we spot another famous bird in NZ, the Kea

Arthur Pass

Kea, according to the YHA host, it’s a rare high mountain parrot in NZ. It have up to 5 years old children intelligence.

Whenever you found them, remember:

  1. Never feed to prevent them losing their hunting ability.
  2. Seal you food bag/box as they know how to open and search for food.
  3. Secure your belonging as they reported stealing passport and DSLR.

Next, we process to the highest waterfall in NZ, the Devil’s PunchBowl

Devil’s Punchbowl is one of the highest waterfall in NZ.
It’s also a speciality in Arthur Pass Track.
According to YHA host, you’ll have a chance to see the frozen waterfall during winter if the night is cold enough.

And we actually saw the many frozen waterfall the day after the coldest night in Arthur Pass(-7’C on the night before we reach).

After Arthur Pass, next station will be the mystery west coast!

Talley——My First Full Time Job

After working at Talley’s for so long, and leave Talley’s for so long, Finally I can post a blog about Talley’s~

So allow Me Introduce Talley’s

Talley’s Group Ltd

Talley's

The official introduction you can read yourself through the website~
Let me tell you the story behind as a worker:

  • The security guard in the guard is their human resource department…
Anything related to the worker have to go through them, such as interview, fill form…
So it’s a good idea to be friend (or let them “remember” your face) to increase your chance to get inside!
  • Some factory inside looking for workers all the year. Especially Mussel deapartment!
During winter, they need 100+- more worker in their fish factory for Hoki season.
*Ice-cream department is the best(free milk shake and ice cream everyday) while is the hardest department to get in
  • As worker, you can enjoy 15% discount from their staff shop, normally a fillet for 1-4nzd.
Beside, there are some ice-cream for sale too, and the one which export to Japan is much more cheaper, and delicious than local
(How to know it’s exported? just search for japan word)
Suggestion: Blue Warehou, Moki,  Exported Green Tea Ice-cream, marinated wedges

    Talley's

  • Although NZ minimum wage is 13.75nzd, in Talley’s if you work more than 40 hours, the 41st hour will be 1.25x which is 17.1875nzd
Another allowance is if you work more than 10 hours a day (total working hours 10h 45min), than you have another tax-free 7 nzd lunch allowance
Fish department can enjoy this allowance most cause they can work until 60 hours ++ (if over-time)  per week
which equal to 700++ nzd per week after tax
But there are some unfair calculation in mussel department, which same working hour will less 20-60nzd.
  • The over-time can gain through cleaning, although it’s hard, but every hour count 1.25x
To get over-time, you have to ask your supervisor (blue hat) which in charge cleaning.
Since Local Kiwi don’t really like cleaning, you can easily get the OT if you perform well.
  • A little bad thing is the day shift is from 6am – 2/4/5pm, despite wake up early, I still can remember the feeling when I cycle to work in the winter morning!

Next, I’ll introduce my work——Mussel opener~
(I just knew that I have no picture of mussel!)
and this is Mussel!

The whole progress in mussel department:

  1. Pick mussel from mussel farm (chance given to experienced worker)
  2. Roughly throw away the wild mussel and wash the mussel bag (1 position)

    Credit:http://shop.urnerbarry.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=ubp&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=LTH-32
  3. Steam the mussel (experienced worker)
  4. After it cooked, time for our job to open it (50 position in Motueka)
    1. Pull off the hair
    2. Cut off one side of attached meat
    3. throw away the empty shell and put the meat shell for packaging
  5. 4 to 6 workers have to do the quality check (missed hair)
  6. Instant freeze the mussel
  7. A few more worker do the final QC
  8. A machine will distribute the weight and 3 to 5 worker for packaging.

So there are over 70 positions available in mussel department, and 20+ for WHVer after minus the original workers…
and the work is available for spring(scallop), summer and autumn.
Since the work is indoor and not really hard, it can be consider as a good work~
For Social Life, beside a group of WHV firend,

I have to deal with a really strict supervisor (blue hat)!

Talley's

This blue hat have a really “mad” face, loud sound and sometimes ridiculous …
I am really “lucky” to have this high level people as my first supervisor~
But also lucky to have chance to learn a lot from him especially doing cleaning.

Basically that’s my life in Talley’s, others I can’t really remember…
But if you have any question, you are welcome to ask here~
