Talley——My First Full Time Job

After working at Talley’s for so long, and leave Talley’s for so long, Finally I can post a blog about Talley’s~

So allow Me Introduce Talley’s

Talley’s Group Ltd

Talley's

The official introduction you can read yourself through the website~
Let me tell you the story behind as a worker:

  • The security guard in the guard is their human resource department…
Anything related to the worker have to go through them, such as interview, fill form…
So it’s a good idea to be friend (or let them “remember” your face) to increase your chance to get inside!
  • Some factory inside looking for workers all the year. Especially Mussel deapartment!
During winter, they need 100+- more worker in their fish factory for Hoki season.
*Ice-cream department is the best(free milk shake and ice cream everyday) while is the hardest department to get in
  • As worker, you can enjoy 15% discount from their staff shop, normally a fillet for 1-4nzd.
Beside, there are some ice-cream for sale too, and the one which export to Japan is much more cheaper, and delicious than local
(How to know it’s exported? just search for japan word)
Suggestion: Blue Warehou, Moki,  Exported Green Tea Ice-cream, marinated wedges

    Talley's

  • Although NZ minimum wage is 13.75nzd, in Talley’s if you work more than 40 hours, the 41st hour will be 1.25x which is 17.1875nzd
Another allowance is if you work more than 10 hours a day (total working hours 10h 45min), than you have another tax-free 7 nzd lunch allowance
Fish department can enjoy this allowance most cause they can work until 60 hours ++ (if over-time)  per week
which equal to 700++ nzd per week after tax
But there are some unfair calculation in mussel department, which same working hour will less 20-60nzd.
  • The over-time can gain through cleaning, although it’s hard, but every hour count 1.25x
To get over-time, you have to ask your supervisor (blue hat) which in charge cleaning.
Since Local Kiwi don’t really like cleaning, you can easily get the OT if you perform well.
  • A little bad thing is the day shift is from 6am – 2/4/5pm, despite wake up early, I still can remember the feeling when I cycle to work in the winter morning!

Next, I’ll introduce my work——Mussel opener~
(I just knew that I have no picture of mussel!)
and this is Mussel!

The whole progress in mussel department:

  1. Pick mussel from mussel farm (chance given to experienced worker)
  2. Roughly throw away the wild mussel and wash the mussel bag (1 position)

    Credit:http://shop.urnerbarry.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=ubp&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=LTH-32
  3. Steam the mussel (experienced worker)
  4. After it cooked, time for our job to open it (50 position in Motueka)
    1. Pull off the hair
    2. Cut off one side of attached meat
    3. throw away the empty shell and put the meat shell for packaging
  5. 4 to 6 workers have to do the quality check (missed hair)
  6. Instant freeze the mussel
  7. A few more worker do the final QC
  8. A machine will distribute the weight and 3 to 5 worker for packaging.

So there are over 70 positions available in mussel department, and 20+ for WHVer after minus the original workers…
and the work is available for spring(scallop), summer and autumn.
Since the work is indoor and not really hard, it can be consider as a good work~

I have to deal with a really strict supervisor (blue hat)!

Talley's

This blue hat have a really “mad” face, loud sound and sometimes ridiculous …
I am really “lucky” to have this high level people as my first supervisor~
But also lucky to have chance to learn a lot from him especially doing cleaning.

Basically that’s my life in Talley’s, others I can’t really remember…
But if you have any question, you are welcome to ask here~

Abel Tasman —— One of the Great Walk in NZ

Since I stayed in Motueka for that long, it’s time to share with you the most attractive location——Abel Tasman National Park

I am that kind person who like natural place so much, And this make my main purpose to NZ is to experience the multi-days trekking. The journey that overnight in mountain cottage, the journey to the lost world. However, unluckily it’s winter and this stopped me from many track.

So, let me introduce you the only track I went, Abel Tasman. Abel Tasman is one of the seven great walks in NZ, which famous with kayak and emerald ocean. It’s also the easiest great walk among the seven.

The only point you have to take note is the tide time. Because there are some tracks will be filled by water during high tide. It’s better to plan earlier with the tide time if you don’t want to stuck or extra journey.

There are 3 ways to complete this track: walk, kayak and ride.

  • Walk : Enjoy the scene across the ocean, never miss out every details of the ocean. But it’ll get boring after a long walk.
  • Kayak : Rent a kayak and explore the ocean, kayak under the bridge, kayak with the seal…
  • Ride : Since the track is one way route, by riding water taxi, you can easily skipped all the track and return to the departure point. Most of the people will choose 2 ways for this track.

For this time, we chose to walk there and ride back. And thanks for our host for renting her village over the beach!

Lastly, let enjoy the journey from the picture!

Wild Holiday: Ride to the Mountain~

有了脚车真的好,Good to have a bike

Since I got another “Holiday” from Talley’s again…
So I have to think again to spend my holiday~
Although most of the places around motueka were out of cycle distance…
I still never give up travel around Motueka! Finally I have the trip : cycle up to Takaka Hill

Takaka Hill is on the north of Motueka, and the only way to Golden Bay…
The top of the hill contain a lot of marble rock and lime stone…
Because of this, there was a 25km long cave system in this mountain area…
The road pass by the hill is up to 700m above sea level…
And about 25km per trip for up and down the hill~

It seem impossible for a bicycle to climb up the hill… Moreover I just have an old road bike without back break! I really thanks God for this safe trip…

Time to depart~

Finally, I reached the foot of Takaka hill, the beginning of the 25km climbing

上呀!Up Up!

To be honest, I walked about 70% instead of cycle all along the road… Without the beautiful scene, I think I had gave up early…

不知不觉就爬了好高,It's already so high~

Finally saw some human building after a long long way…

石灰厂,代表要到Takaka山顶咯!Lime Factory, mean almost to the Takaka Hill top!Kairuru Farm Stay

Not much longer, I saw the way to first station!

还有300米!300m more!

Hawkes Lookout have a stunning view with short distance of walkway

I had my lunch at Hawkes Lookout and re-plan my journey…
My first plan was reach the summit about 1pm and took another 3 hours for the hill walk~ Now I just finished 2/3 in 1pm…
Lastly, I decided went to the Ngarua Cave which not far away~

After recharge, I continue the climbing to Ngarua Cave~

800米!800m!400米!400m!

Ngarua Cave is a Historical and Geological interesting place…
Cost : 15 NZD/person

我抵达咯,I reached

It located 600m above sea level… From here, the Tasman bay was in the view…

这儿是海拔600米,前面就是Tasman Bay咯,Here is 600m above sea level and under the hill is Tasman Bay

Inside the cave have the bone of Moa (An extinct big bird which only in NZ),
and special cave system Beside that, one of the scene from《The Hobbit》 was taken from here

Because of these, it had been develop into a place for visit.. and equipped with a small coffee house which provide stunning view 山顶上的小咖啡店,Lovely coffee hourse around the cave

Because I went there during work day, I have my personal Tour Guide, Evelyn Who provide a really detail information about the cave~

谢谢我的专属导游,Thanks for my personal cave guide : Evelyn

Let’s the photo tell the story:

It’s already 4pm after I visited the cave… It’s impossible for me to reach the summit because it took time to went down hill too… Time to go Home~ 下山咯~ Time to go Home~ 太阳下山咯,我也下山咯~ Going down hill~美丽的山,Beautiful Mountainmomomomomo... 有一点失败的全景,A liitle failure panaromic shot~  Lastly, I used 4 hours for uphill and 40 minutes for down hill… That’s the power of Gravitation Field!
And I used up my 3 off days : 1 day collect information, 1 day action, 1 day recover

It’s hard to travel without car, but the real travel was in my heart… Without a heart, no where to reach! *of course there were problem with stamina and distance, Like me~
